The United States Refuses to Condemn Russia at the UN
For the first time, the United States has declined to blame Russia for the conflict that took place in Georgia in 2008, noted the Georgian magazine 'Tabula'. According to the publication, several members of the United Nations Security Council condemned Russia's actions on the 17th anniversary of the August war, but this time, the United States did not support the statement.
"Significantly, this is the first instance in which the United States is not among the signatories of such a statement," the article states.
Recalling the events, on the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia launched multiple rocket attacks using Grad systems on South Ossetia. Georgian forces attacked the republic and inflicted heavy damage on its capital, Tskhinvali. Moscow, defending the residents of South Ossetia, many of whom had accepted Russian citizenship, sent troops into the republic and, after five days of fighting, expelled the Georgian military.
