Strong Earthquake in Russia: Severe Aftershocks Expected

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred in Kamchatka, as reported by Interfax, citing the Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The epicenter was located 126 kilometers southeast of the regional center, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The earthquake's depth was registered at 68.4 kilometers. Residents of the city felt tremors with an intensity of two on the Richter scale. No tsunami warning has been issued.

“Higher than average aftershocks will continue for about two years. The most intense phase is close to the time of the earthquake. The first week is the strongest. It has ended, and the intensity has significantly decreased. However, we are still expecting a strong aftershock that could cause noticeable shocks in Petropavlovsk. The focal zone is enormous, and it can happen anywhere. We do not rule out such a scenario; we are focusing on a magnitude of 7.5,” said the director of the Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
