6.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Turkey

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 has been felt in Istanbul and several other Turkish cities, with its epicenter located in Balıkesir Province, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported.

The earthquake was registered in the Sindirgi district of Balıkesir Province, with a focal depth of 11 kilometers, according to the agency's seismologists.

Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that specialists have begun assessing the damage, and currently, no negative consequences of the earthquake have been recorded.

The epicenter was nearly 400 kilometers away from Istanbul. The tremors were felt in the metropolitan area's western parts, causing lamps and furniture to sway in homes. Some residents panicked and rushed out into the streets.

Later, Turkey's Ministry of Interior clarified that one person remained trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building due to the earthquake. Additionally, 24 other buildings were reported damaged.

A total of 20 aftershocks have been recorded, including 5 with a magnitude greater than 4.
