Pashinyan and Aliyev Change the 'Regulator' of the South Caucasus: 'Kommersant'
A senior diplomatic source from 'Kommersant' has confirmed the preparatory work for the unannounced visits of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the United States, which have been kept secret in both countries but are already being discussed in Washington. The document being prepared is not a peace treaty, but the very fact of its signing at the White House would allow Donald Trump to once again present himself as a peacemaker—this time in the South Caucasus.
Yerevan and Baku, which are experiencing a crisis in relations with Moscow, are demonstrating their willingness to recognize the United States as the leading regulator in the region.
The unannounced visits of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to Washington, set to take place on August 8, are being kept under wraps. No official statements have been made in Baku and Yerevan; neither confirming nor denying the circulating information. The primary source of this news is journalist Alex Raufogly, whose name has not previously appeared in regional media.
Additionally, 'Kommersant's' senior diplomatic source confirmed that preparations are underway for a trilateral meeting between Trump, Aliyev, and Pashinyan at the White House.
In Washington, associates of the Republican Party are already discussing the upcoming meeting, hoping for another diplomatic victory for the White House. 'Thanks to Trump's efforts, a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia is on the verge of being finalized,' said Senator Steve Daines from Montana. It is worth noting that a similar statement was made by South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson, who said that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia will soon be achieved.
