Armenia and Azerbaijan to Sign Memorandum of Understanding
It is expected that Azerbaijan and Armenia will sign a memorandum of understanding in Washington, committing to strive for peace, reports Middle East Eye, citing its sources.
Sources from the publication have indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump will host Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the signing ceremony in the White House.
“It is anticipated that the two leaders will sign a ‘Memorandum of Intent’ rather than a draft peace agreement, which would provide Trump with a diplomatic achievement he sought in the region last month,” the article states.
Notably, according to Middle East Eye, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov contacted his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan on Monday to inform him about the summit. Sources from Turkey's Foreign Ministry noted that Fidan discussed bilateral and regional issues with Bayramov.
“One of the main obstacles remains the ‘Zangezur corridor,’ which would connect Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan through Armenian territory. Armenia rejects the term ‘Zangezur corridor,’ claiming it harbors irredentist implications for its sovereign territory in Syunik,” the publication writes.
