Samvel Karapetyan to Participate in Elections Separately, Not Uniting with Kocharian and Sargsyan
Russia-based businessman Samvel Karapetyan is showing determination to enter politics even from detention. He has announced from the basement of the National Security Service's "Kentron" penitentiary in Yerevan that he is forming a new political team and intends to participate in the parliamentary elections of 2026. This is reported by the newspaper "Zhoghovurd".
According to the publication, Karapetyan has definitively decided to participate in the elections separately, without uniting with former presidents Robert Kocharian or Serzh Sargsyan. He aims to assemble a team exclusively composed of professionals from various fields who will have the capability to initiate systemic reforms. In Karapetyan's words, this team will not align itself with divisive issues. He emphasizes that there are professionals within the current government who should continue their activities for the benefit of the country.
Political commentators consider this a healthy message in an increasingly polarized society. However, Karapetyan's initiative is reportedly accompanied by a somewhat misguided calculation, as sources indicate he intends to establish his own media outlet. Practical experience shows that such promotional platforms often do not justify their costs, presenting large expenses, short-term effectiveness, and high salaries before elections, followed by little to nothing afterward.
Nonetheless, Samvel Karapetyan, who holds citizenship in both Armenia and Russia, is entering the fray. His political candidacy has been announced. It remains to be seen who will lead the team, as the question of leadership is still under discussion. For further details, refer to the original source.
