Prominent Lawyers Jeffrey Robertson and Amal Clooney May Join Samvel Karapetyan's Defense

Businessman Samvel Karapetyan may have renowned lawyers Jeffrey Robertson and Amal Clooney join his defense team. This was announced by Samvel Karapetyan's defense counsel.

“Australian-British prominent lawyer and legal scholar Jeffrey Robertson (King's Counsel, KC) expressed his deep concern regarding the excessively severe judicial measures applied against Samvel Karapetyan, highlighting the political context of the charges presented against him. According to Robertson, the application of detention during the pre-trial phase, accompanied by the misleading and insufficient justifications presented by the competent authorities and the unsubstantiated decisions accepted by the courts, contradicts the principle of the rule of law and the guarantees provided by international law.

Mr. Robertson is currently considering the possibility of joining the international team of lawyers defending Mr. Samvel Karapetyan and supporting the lawsuits submitted by the team to international organizations. In further stages of representation at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the official involvement of Ms. Amal Clooney in the process may also be addressed.

Jeffrey Robertson is the founding head of Doughty Street Chambers. Previously, he has represented Armenia alongside Amal Clooney in the case concerning the legal accountability for the denial of genocide. Robertson is also well known for his significant dedication to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the protection of the rights of the people of Artsakh,” the statement reads.

It should be noted that Samvel Karapetyan has been charged with inciting a public call to seize power. He has been detained for two months.
