Azerbaijan Accused of Supplying Contaminated Oil
Mariam Z.
Two companies have accused Azerbaijan of polluting oil supplied via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline with organic chlorides, which are used to enhance oil production. The first to report this was British Petroleum (BP Plc), the country's largest oil producer. This was reported by Bloomberg.
According to the company, this pertains to the contamination of separate oil batches. Organic chlorides mixed with crude can cause significant damage to refineries and equipment.
A large quantity of oil is supplied from Azerbaijan to Turkey's Ceyhan port via the pipeline, and BP Plc manages the company that constructed the pipeline.
