Export of Whitefish Eggs Temporarily Banned
The government has imposed a temporary ban on the export of whitefish eggs from the territory of Armenia. This decision is driven by the requirements for food security in the republic, sustainable use of biological resources in Lake Sevan, and the preservation of biodiversity.
According to the justification, as a result of the regulation process for the industrial fishing of whitefish in Lake Sevan, there has been an observable increase in the biomass of whitefish in recent years: 3,974 tons in 2023, 679 tons in 2024, and 314 tons by June 1, 2025.
In order to prevent possible negative consequences, to ensure the preservation of a wild fish species with high industrial value, and to organize natural reproduction, this legal act proposes to establish a ban on the export of whitefish eggs from the territory of Armenia. Currently, there is no wild fish species in Armenia whose eggs have industrial significance, as continuous increase in fish species volumes is still necessary.
