Alen Simonyan Discusses Captives Held in Baku with Valentina Matviyenko
The Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, raised the issue of captives held in Azerbaijan, including those who are illegally detained and considered missing, during a meeting with Valentina Matviyenko, Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. This was reported by the press service of the National Assembly of Armenia.
It was noted that the meeting also addressed regional developments. The Speaker of the National Assembly reiterated Armenia's stance on establishing lasting peace in the region, stating that Armenia is waiting for the Azerbaijani side to sign the already agreed peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In turn, the Chairperson of the Federation Council emphasized that the Russian Federation advocates for peace and stability in the region. The interlocutors discussed various issues pertaining to the bilateral agenda, including political, economic, educational, and cultural matters, particularly focusing on the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation.
Subsequently, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairperson of the Federation Council participated in the official opening of the 39th session of the inter-parliamentary commission on cooperation between the Federal Assembly of Russia and the National Assembly of Armenia. Alen Simonyan and Valentina Matviyenko toured the National Assembly building and attended an exhibition titled “The Road to Sanahin: The Story of an Orphanage,” featuring materials from the Committee on Culture of St. Petersburg and the State Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad.
It is noteworthy that the delegation headed by Valentina Matviyenko has arrived in Armenia to participate in the 39th session of the Armenian-Russian inter-parliamentary commission, which is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the preservation of historical memory.
