We Did Not Have Enough Wit at the Right Time: Ararat Mirzoyan
“You neither went to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, nor declared it an independent state, nor acknowledged it as part of Armenia, nor have you given concessions, nor have you not given concessions... You simply prolonged the status quo, knowing full well that one day it would explode in the people's face.” This statement was made by Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in response to a question from Arthur Khachatryan, an MP from the 'Armenia' faction.
He noted that when, after the 2018 revolution, it was announced that the new authorities had come to give away lands, they were so naive that they did not realize what was being discussed. “I mention this to show that you knew very well that this would explode one day.”
Mirzoyan also stated, “Unfortunately, we and the Armenian people, I personally, did not have enough wit, political maturity, or political insight to orient ourselves correctly and to realize when to make compromises and to seek resolutions.”
He highlighted that the agreement on the text of the peace treaty is a tangible achievement: “Even in an unsigned state, merely declaring the fact has indeed increased the level of security for the Republic of Armenia.”
Mirzoyan further remarked that according to good traditions, a dispute arises between him and the ARF: “Whoever it is, you should not be speaking on this issue. And let me tell you why: you represent a political force that concluded as many unfavorable treaties as possible with the invading enemy between 1918 and 1920.”
“Let’s not fight; you have no arguments and no grounds to speak,” Mirzoyan said.
