Child with Autism Denied Participation in Last Bell Ceremony: Details
David, who has autism, was set to finish 9th grade this year but did not go on stage today with his classmates. This was reported by David's mother on her Facebook page.
“Today was my son David’s graduation day, but he did not participate. My son did not go on stage because you did not understand his world. Autism is not a judgment; David was not there today because his real needs were not recognized, no one listened, and nobody tried to create an environment where he would feel confident and valued,” wrote Syuzanna Shalunts.
The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports emphasizes the importance of all children, particularly those with special educational needs, participating in school events. Educational institutions must take all possible steps to ensure that every child is fully included in all educational processes and activities,” the Ministry stated to MediaHub.
They also mentioned that this incident is under their attention, and next week the Minister is scheduled to meet with David and his parent.
