Pentagon Identifies the Most Serious Potential Threat to the U.S.

The Pentagon believes that the most serious potential threat to the United States would be the deployment of nuclear weapons in space by its potential adversaries. This was stated by General Steven W. Whiting, the head of U.S. Space Command, during hearings before the House Armed Services Committee.

“Of the threats we could face, this is the most concerning. We are certainly considering all possible options to ensure that such a device does not pose a threat to our space capabilities,” he said, responding to a question regarding the implications of “the deployment of nuclear weapons in orbit” for the United States. The legislator insisted that Russia has plans to deploy such weapons in space.

“We are certainly looking at all possible options to prevent a threat related to such a device to our space capabilities,” Whiting said, adding, “I agree that this is the most dangerous potential weapon for our space architecture.”
