Large-Scale Operation in Istanbul: Mayor Arrested

Law enforcement has initiated a large-scale operation in Istanbul, with opposition mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu reported to have been arrested, according to Turkish media sources.

“An extensive anti-corruption operation has started at the Istanbul Municipality. Within the framework of this operation, Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been arrested,” the publications state.

A search has been conducted at İmamoğlu's house, and a significant police presence has been deployed near the mayor's residence.

It is noted that around 100 arrest warrants have been issued in total, including for journalists and businessmen. Among those on the list is the mayor's press secretary, Murat Aygün.

Earlier, it was disclosed that Istanbul University has decided to annul İmamoğlu's diploma following a relevant inquiry from the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of Turkey. This decision hinders his ability to run for the presidency of the country.

The mayor of Istanbul is still the only candidate from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and is viewed as the main rival to Turkey's current president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, should he decide to run (which may only occur in the event of snap presidential elections, subject to the agreement of 360 members of parliament).

Turkey's constitution allows only individuals with higher education qualifications to stand for the presidency.
