White House Highlights Reasons for Funding Cuts to 'Voice of America'
The White House has released a statement titled 'The Radical Voice of America,' citing 'radical propaganda' as the reason for budget cuts to the radio station. The announcement notes that President Donald Trump's order, published on Friday, ensures that taxpayers 'will no longer fall for the trap of radical propaganda.'
The White House also references various journalists' statements accusing 'Voice of America' of 'fraud,' publishing against Trump, and imposing 'narrow partisan political agendas.' Previously, 'Voice of America' Director Michael Abrams wrote on Facebook that he, along with the 'entire staff' of 1,300 people, has been placed on leave.
This announcement comes after President Trump signed an order to close the primary agency of 'Voice of America,' as reported by CNN. Some local language broadcasters for 'Voice of America' have ceased airing news programs and have switched to music to fill airtime, according to listeners.
Even the chief editors of 'Voice of America' have been instructed to cease operations, leading staff to anticipate that news coverage worldwide will stop, according to half a dozen sources who spoke anonymously with CNN.
'Voice of America' is part of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which also oversees Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, and broadcasting networks in the Middle East. The President had previously signed an order to suspend operations for seven agencies, including USAGM.
