We Will Change the Shape and Content of Conscription: Suren Papikyan

Every year, we make changes to various government decisions before conscription that significantly alter the picture of our conscription resources. This was stated by Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan during a press conference.

“I must tell you that as a result of the summer conscription, due to our changes, the number of conscripts has increased by 1/5. In other words, the conscription for the summer of this year has increased by 1/5 compared to last year. I expect the same for the winter conscription because we have also closed certain channels during the winter conscription,” he said.

“I must admit that as consistent as we are in trying to pay attention to which diseases are increasing and which are decreasing, I do not consider this objective; rather, I believe these have subjective layers. Based on this circumstance, a working group has been created under the leadership of the Minister of Defense, which includes representatives from several government agencies, as well as lawmakers.”

“We are currently trying to review the shape and content of conscription, with the functionality of the conscript being at the core. This will provide an opportunity for us to engage also those conscripts who, at first glance, should be exempt from the army according to today’s procedures, but are not physically different from you and me in terms of their professional field or physical engagement. I believe this will significantly change our overall picture and lead to a more objective conscription process, eliminating the issues raised by our partners,” he added.
