10 EU Countries Demand Sanctions Against Russian Gas: Bloomberg
Ten EU countries are calling for sanctions against Russian natural gas and liquefied gas, according to Bloomberg.
Among these countries are Sweden, Ireland, Poland, and the three Baltic republics, which propose to ban the import of pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the EU to restrict the revenue that the Kremlin uses to finance the Ukrainian military conflict.
Although the EU has already banned the import of Russian oil, the dependency of some countries on Russian gas has so far hindered the imposition of sanctions on this type of fuel. The adoption of restrictive measures requires unanimous approval from all 27 member countries of the EU.
However, according to the agency, this is becoming an increasingly complex issue considering the skepticism of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán regarding such actions.
“The ultimate goal is to ban the import of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas as soon as possible,” the document accessible to Bloomberg News states, which also mentions Denmark, Finland, the Czech Republic, and Romania.
