Preliminary Election Results for Gyumri Mayor
Today, the results of the preliminary election for the acting mayor, which lasted three days, have been summarized. According to the results, the frontrunner is Sarik Minasyan with 253 votes.
The primaries, or preliminary election for the acting mayor, is essentially being held for the first time in Armenia. The process started on December 8.
The candidates for the Gyumri mayor election included former advisor to the Shirak governor Levon Ananyan, Civil Contract party MPs Davit Arushanyan and Karen Sarukhanyan, Civil Contract council member Shavarsh Aramyan, former deputy mayor of Gyumri Vahagn Mkrtchyan, the coordinator of the Civil Contract Youth Union in Gyumri Emma Barselyan, and the head of the Gyumri division of the Unified Social Service Sarik Minasyan. The residents of Gyumri have made their choice among these seven self-nominated candidates.
It is noteworthy that since the end of October, when the Balasanyan coalition of the council resigned its mandates, Gyumri has been without a leader, which has caused numerous issues. The option of resolving the problem through the primaries to elect a temporary acting mayor was proposed by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He stated that the elected acting mayor will likely be the Civil Contract’s candidate in future elections.
No specific timeline has been given for when early elections will be held in Gyumri.
