Armenian Brandy Will No Longer Be Called Cognac
Processes are being carried out towards a smooth and effective cessation of the use of the geographical indication "Cognac," Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan announced during budget discussions in the National Assembly.
As a preferred option for Armenian brandy, it has been suggested to use the name "Armenian brandy," he added.
It is noteworthy that during the last session of the Government, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan mentioned this, stating that the name "Cognac" is a place name and is considered a non-material asset of France, while what is produced in Armenia should not be called cognac, but rather brandy.
The alcoholic beverage known as cognac is named after the French city of Cognac. According to European standards, if production takes place outside of France, the beverage cannot be called cognac.
