FC Urartu Joins Demands for Resignation of Football Federation President
FC Urartu has joined the fan clubs of the Armenian national team and the fan movements of the Armenian Premier League in demanding the resignation of the President of the Football Federation of Armenia, Armen Melikbekyan.
“For a long time, FC Urartu has repeatedly stated about the incompetence of the current leadership of the Football Federation, which not only hinders the development of Armenian football but directly obstructs it,” the club’s statement reads.
According to the club, the situation surrounding the national team, as well as that in club football, is directly related to the decisions made within the Football Federation. It highlights that ineffective appointments are occurring in the positions of head coach for both the national team and various age-group teams.
The club deems the current format of the matches in Armenia's top division (matches scheduled during working daytime hours) unacceptable.
FC Urartu believes that the current leadership of the Football Federation has no moral right to continue running this body.
Recall that on October 13, the Armenian national team suffered a 0:2 defeat at home to North Macedonia and was effectively deprived of the opportunity to compete for the first place in Group C. Immediately after the match, it became known that the team’s head coach, Oleksandr Petrakov, had been dismissed, and fans gathered outside the Football Federation's building demanding a meeting with president Armen Melikbekyan. Later, the fans began calling for Melikbekyan’s resignation.
