Under What Conditions Would Turkey Leave NATO? Expert Details

Turkey can only leave NATO if the alliance becomes ineffective, according to Alexander Perenjiev, an associate professor in political analysis and socio-psychological processes, in an interview with Lenta.ru.

“Indeed, there is currently a certain contradiction regarding Turkey’s request to join BRICS while simultaneously being a NATO member,” said the expert.

According to the political scientist, although BRICS is not a military organization, Turkey's membership in this coalition is concerning some current NATO members. The expert believes that Turkey may still decide to leave the alliance, but only if NATO becomes a less capable organization. At the same time, the expert argues that Turkey cannot be expelled from NATO because there has never been a precedent for such an action.
