Aliyev Does Not Know What Awaits Him in the Future; If He Imagines Himself as Napoleon, His End Will Be the Same: Melkonyan
Several months ago, Aliyev himself suggested signing the already agreed points of the peace treaty and moving forward, but when we propose the same thing, they refuse. This indicates that they do not wish to sign a peace treaty. This was stated by Gagik Melkonyan, a member of the ruling 'Civil Contract' party in Armenia, in a conversation with a NEWS.am correspondent.
He clarified that one of the points not agreed upon relates to the unblocking of communications, and both sides had agreed to remove it from the draft treaty for later discussion.
“The next point concerns changes to the Constitution of Armenia, and we have stated that this is our internal matter. There are also points in their Constitution that we do not like, and this has been mentioned. They need to make changes. Tomorrow, they could also cite the so-called enclaves as a reason,” the lawmaker added.
According to him, it is unclear how long the work of the joint demarcation commission will take. “Azerbaijan agrees to the demarcation, but the peace treaty is a very complicated document. They can violate it, so even after signing the document, we must be cautious. We sincerely want peace, but do they want it? Their actions show that they do not. We are not begging for peace and must be prepared for anything. If there is no peace, if they want to fight, then we must fight. Peace does not satisfy them, although the people in Azerbaijan want peace, but Aliyev sees himself as Napoleon. In the beginning, everything was going well for Napoleon too, but what happened in the end? He does not know what awaits him in the future. If he imagines himself as Napoleon, then his end will be the same,” emphasized Melkonyan.
He pointed out that if demarcation occurs, it would be in Armenia's interests. Melkonyan noted that Azerbaijan has returned 800-900 hectares of land in Berkaber to Armenia, and demining is being conducted there.
The lawmaker described the Armenian opposition as dangerous, as, in his opinion, the opposition speaks in favor of the adversary. “The opposition constantly quotes Aliyev. The opposition said that demarcation would not be possible, but it happened. On our side, there is an Armenian border guard, on their side an Azerbaijani. What threat exists here? There are no eternal enemies and eternal friends. The residents of the border villages of Armenia and Azerbaijan know each other. Over time, perhaps connections will strengthen. The children of the same people are in touch abroad. The people rejected the movement ('Tavush for the Fatherland' - ed.). The people realized that this is their village and they must stand firm on their own land. The state must support them; that is why it grants privileges and will continue to expand support,” Melkonyan concluded.
