When to Expect the Largest Supermoon of 2024
The largest supermoon of this year will be observed on October 17. On this day, the Moon will reach its full phase while being at the minimum distance from Earth, according to the Moscow Planetarium.
According to the planetarium, at 03:47 Moscow time (04:47 Yerevan time) on October 17, the Moon will approach Earth at a distance of 357,172 kilometers, marking the closest distance for 2024. The full moon phase will begin at 14:28 Moscow time (15:28 Yerevan time).
One month prior, on September 18, the second largest full moon of 2024 will be visible in the sky, although on this day, the Moon will be further from Earth than during the supermoon in October. A supermoon is defined as a full moon that is at its minimum distance from Earth. At this moment, the Moon appears 14% larger than when it is at its farthest point in its orbit.
The previous supermoon was observed on August 19.
