Amirbekov Again Points Out the Remaining Obstacles to Signing Peace Treaty
The process of drafting a peace treaty with Armenia is nearing completion, but 'we must be confident that it will lead to lasting peace,' said Elchin Amirbekov, the Azerbaijani president's special representative, in an interview with the South Korean Korea Times.
He reiterated Baku's precondition regarding changes to Armenia's Constitution. 'The remaining obstacle to signing the peace treaty is Armenia's constitutional claim over Azerbaijani territory. Once this issue is resolved, we can move forward,' the Azerbaijani official stated.
The Armenian authorities consider the Constitutional amendment a domestic issue and deem Baku's demands unacceptable.
Amirbekov also ruled out the possibility of organizing negotiations between Yerevan and Baku with the participation of mediators. 'We do not expect any international organization or third party to play a direct role, aside from supporting the two states on the path to peace,' he noted.
The Azerbaijani presidential envoy also mentioned that Baku anticipates South Korea's support in demining efforts.
