Abbas Araqchi Appointed as New Head of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Abbas Araqchi has been appointed as the new head of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with his candidacy confirmed by the country's parliament. Following the election of Masoud Pezeshkian as president, Araqchi served as his advisor on foreign policy.

The new head of the Ministry previously held the position of deputy minister and played a significant role in the signing of the nuclear deal in 2015. As a special envoy for the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, he visited Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey in October 2020, amidst the peak of the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh, to discuss options for resolving the conflict.

It is worth noting that a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian crashed on May 19 in the northwestern part of the country, in the Verzegani region. The high-ranking officials were returning from a ceremony to inaugurate hydropower facilities on the Araks River, attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

On July 5, Masoud Pezeshkian was elected as the new president of Iran.
