Criminal Case Filed Against Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh for Murder

A criminal case has been filed against the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, on charges of murder. According to TASS, the former leader of the South Asian republic is accused of the murder of grocery store owner Abu Syed, who was shot dead during protests against government job quotas in Dhaka on July 19.

The Dhaka Tribune reports that Syed died from a bullet fired by police. The lawsuit regarding the murder of the local entrepreneur was filed in Dhaka court on behalf of Amir Shatili, a resident of the Mohammadpur area.

In addition to Sheikh Hasina, other defendants in the case include the former General Secretary of the ruling party, the former Minister of Interior, the former Chief Inspector of Police, and several other senior police officials.

According to the Bangladesh Penal Code, the most severe punishments are assigned for murder, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.
