Call for Bulgarian President Not to Sign Law Prohibiting LGBT 'Propaganda' in Schools from the Council of Europe
Michael O'Flaherty, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, has urged Bulgarian President Rumen Radev not to sign a law that bans LGBT 'propaganda' in schools. "Authorities should combat discrimination and hostile rhetoric against LGBT individuals, especially in the lead-up to elections," O'Flaherty stated on X, expressing his deep concern over the legislative changes adopted by Bulgarian lawmakers.
Recently, the parliament approved a law prohibiting the promotion of ideas and viewpoints related to 'non-traditional sexual orientations' within the educational system. Activists have called on Radev to veto the law, but he has not yet announced his intentions.
