Armenian Athletes' Results Are Satisfactory, Says Karen Giloyan
“The Olympic Games are the most difficult sporting events, which become a serious test for organizers. This was my 9th Olympic Games, and Paris 2024 is among the top three of the games I have seen. Paris, as a city filled with love, was able to warmly welcome its guests,” said Karen Giloyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia, summarizing the performance of Armenian athletes at the 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris, during an interview with journalists.
Giloyan emphasized that it should be taken into account that Armenia participated with 15 athletes, three of whom were granted ‘white cards’. According to him, in this regard, the numbers are very eloquent. “I would assess the results achieved by the athletes as satisfactory. I do not consider it a failure, nor do I consider it fantastic. The strategy that the government has adopted cannot yield results that quickly. Investment in sports today does not turn into a medal tomorrow. In the Los Angeles Olympic Games, I will give a clear answer on whether we are doing the right thing or not. I know many will start to criticize now, but a little patience is needed. However, let me mention some statistical figures: from 1996 to 2024, only the Olympic Games of 1996 and 2016 have had qualitatively better outcomes when we had champions. After these two games, Paris 2024 is qualitatively the best for us with three silvers and one bronze,” he noted.
According to Giloyan, there will be overall summaries in all sports within the next month, analyses will be made, and upcoming actions will be clarified.
