My Mother Has Not Officially Resigned, According to the Constitution, She Remains Prime Minister: Sheikh Hasina's Son
The head of the previous government of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has not officially resigned and, according to the constitution, remains the Prime Minister. This was stated to Reuters by her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
"My mother has never officially retired; she has not had the time," he said. "She was preparing to make an announcement and resign. But then the protesters began marching towards the Prime Minister's residence, there was no time, and my mother didn't even gather her things. According to the constitution, she is still the Prime Minister of Bangladesh," he added.
Wazed noted that although the President dissolved the parliament after consulting with military and opposition political figures, the formation of a caretaker government without the Prime Minister's formal resignation "can be challenged in court." He mentioned that Sheikh Hasina is ready to stand before the court in her homeland, as demanded by the students leading the anti-government protests.
"My mother has done nothing wrong. Just because people in her government did illegal things doesn’t mean she gave those orders, and she is responsible for them," he concluded.
