UN Secretary-General on Growing Nuclear Threats
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes that the world faces threats from the use of nuclear weapons and their exploitation as tools of pressure. He made this statement during a message commemorating the 79th anniversary of the American atomic bombing of Nagasaki, which was read by Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Secretary-General's Deputy and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs at a remembrance ceremony.
"The threat of using nuclear weapons as instruments of pressure has once again shown its face," Guterres stated. He expressed concern that global fragmentation is deepening, with a noticeable decrease in trust levels among states.
The UN Secretary-General reiterated his call for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
