Olympics 2024: Italian Boxer Cries After Match Against Algerian Opponent
Italian boxer Angela Carini broke down in tears after refusing to continue her bout against Algerian athlete Iman Helifi in the 66 kg weight category quarter-finals at the Paris Olympic Games. Carini withdrew from the match in the first round, citing extremely painful blows.
According to il Fatto Quotidiano, Helifi's next opponent will be the winner of the match between Marisa Williamson (Australia) and Luca Hamori (Hungary).
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Helifi and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) during the world championship held in India for not meeting entry criteria. A gender test revealed that women athletes possess XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed them to compete in women's events in 2024.
Boxing matches at the Olympics are organized by a special division created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC voted to expel the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote.
The Olympics in the French capital will conclude on August 11.
