Situation at Vladikavkaz - Upper Lars Section, Armenian Embassy in Russia

The Vladikavkaz – Upper Lars section, which was closed due to the occurrence of landslides in Georgian territory and the impossibility of ensuring safe traffic for vehicles, has been reopened. This was reported to Sputnik Armenia by Vahan Hakobyan, the customs attaché at the Armenian Embassy in Russia.

“After the road was cleared, traffic towards the Russian-Georgian border has been restored,” he stated. Earlier, it was reported that the Vladikavkaz – Upper Lars section was closed for all vehicles.

It is noteworthy that Georgia is constructing a road that bypasses the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Lars highway (Gudauri–Kobi). This involves a nine-kilometer tunnel. The project plans to build a 23 km long two-layer concrete road, five bridges, and five tunnels. After the completion of the project, vehicles will reach Stepantsminda from Tbilisi (at the border with Russia) in 1 hour and 45 minutes (currently it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes). As a result, uninterrupted vehicle movement will be ensured throughout the year.
