Peskov on the Creation of a NATO-like Alliance

There seems to be little need for confrontation mechanisms in the Middle East region. This statement was made by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of Russia, commenting on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's idea of creating a NATO-like alliance in the Middle East.

“We need to understand the details of such an initiative—what countries are included in this alliance. NATO, after all, has a distinctly articulated and systematic focus on confrontation,” Peskov told reporters.

He noted that NATO was created initially to deter the Soviet Union and then the Russian Federation, and it continues to do so to this day.

“Do we need confrontation mechanisms in the Middle East? It seems unlikely, but before drawing any conclusions, we need to understand Mr. Netanyahu's subtleties in such reasoning,” Peskov added.

It is worth noting that Netanyahu had stated during a speech at the U.S. Congress that there is a need to create a NATO-like alliance in the Middle East aimed at countering threats from Iran.
