Donald Trump Issues Statement Following Assassination Attempt
Former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a statement during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania following an assassination attempt against him. His remarks were reported by CNN.
Trump expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement for their rapid response to the gunfire. He revealed that a bullet had struck the upper part of his right ear. “The most important thing is that I want to offer condolences to the family of the man who was killed at the rally, as well as to the family of another person who was seriously injured. It’s incredible that such an act can take place in our country. At this moment, nothing is known about the shooter, who is now deceased,” Trump added.
The former president recounted that he immediately realized “something was wrong” when he heard a whistle, gunshots, and felt the bullet hit his skin. “There was a lot of bleeding, so I understood what was happening,” he said.
Trump was shot at on July 13 during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania while speaking in front of attendees. Following the incident, he was taken to the hospital, according to his press secretary, Steven Chung. He assured that the former president was doing fine.
Current President Joe Biden condemned the assassination attempt on Trump but stated that he did not have sufficient evidence to label the incident as an assassination attempt. The shooting was also condemned by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate leaders Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer, and other political figures.
According to law enforcement sources reported by Associated Press and ABC, the shots fired at Trump have been classified as an attempt on his life. The shooter was positioned on the roof of a building outside the rally venue. Several commentators on the channel and The New York Post referred to him as a “sniper.” Sources from the publication also indicated that the shots were fired from hundreds of meters away, outside the security perimeter. The Butler County District Attorney stated that the shooter must have had a rifle to fire from such a distance, as the distance was hundreds of meters.
