EU Membership Process for Georgia Has Been Suspended
The process of Georgia's accession to the European Union has been suspended. As reported by APA, this was announced by the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pavel Gerchikhin, during a conference in Tbilisi dedicated to EU enlargement.
“With regret, I must note that EU leaders have agreed to suspend Georgia's EU membership process. This is clearly stated in the reports of the European Council,” said Gerchikhin.
The ambassador also spoke about the EU's decision to freeze 30 million euros intended for supporting the state in the defense sector. “And this is just the first step; there will be other decisions as well. Our direct assistance to the Georgian government will be reduced, and we will seek to redirect that assistance to civil society and media. This was announced following the meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg,” Gerchikhin added.
