Two Leading Candidates Identified to Replace Biden

Democratic Party sponsors in the United States have identified Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and California Governor Gavin Newsom as preferred candidates to replace President Joe Biden, who faltered in the presidential debate. This is reported by the Financial Times.

"The key sponsors of the Democratic Party have named Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom as their preferred candidates," the publication states.

According to an anonymous party sponsor, Biden is "doomed" and the party needs to "focus all its attention on what is to come." As noted by the Financial Times, Democratic donors are still concerned about Biden's condition and the implications following his unsuccessful debate with rival Donald Trump last week.

At the same time, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is also among those candidates that sponsors believe could replace Biden.

Meanwhile, American producer of documentary films and Democratic Party sponsor Abigail Disney has refused to make donations to the Democrats until President Joe Biden withdraws from the presidential race.

Earlier reports indicated that Democrats in the U.S. are discussing not whether to replace Biden, but how to do so.
