The U.S. Stands with Armenia: Wicker
Armenia is currently facing a challenging neighborhood, with threats emerging from all directions, stated U.S. Senator Roger Wicker during a press conference at the National Assembly today.
Wicker noted that Russia, Iran, and China, along with North Korea, exhibit aggressive approaches toward regions of the world striving for freedom and democracy. Emphasizing Russia's significant involvement in the region and Iran’s immediate proximity, the senator stated, “They are attempting to obliterate democracy and freedoms in the region, and Armenia is showing great determination and steadfastness to prevent this from happening.”
He highlighted that the Armenian government and its people wish to see a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, desiring its finalization and signing, the completion of border demarcation, the release of prisoners of war, the reopening of borders, freer movement of people from neighboring Turkey, and the encouragement of economic growth, assuring that “in these matters, we stand by your side.”
Wicker also urged Azerbaijan to understand the price and value of freedom. “I want to send a message to our partners in Azerbaijan and to the other members of the OSCE, be wary of what a union with Putin’s Russia could lead to, beware that the Russian 'bear' does not attempt once again to dominate the countries of the former Soviet Union,” said Wicker.
The United States Seeks to Promote the Peace Process
The United States is interested in and wants to promote the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Washington will be actively engaged in this process, stated Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ben Cardin.
In response to a question from “Liberation” regarding the specific reasons for the delay in the signing of the peace treaty and the coordination of border demarcation commissions, National Assembly President Alen Simonyan responded that there is no delay on Armenia's part regarding the peace treaty. “We are ready to sign it. The ball is in the Azerbaijani court,” said the Speaker of the Parliament.
Regarding the coordination of the border demarcation commissions, Simonyan noted that the process is ongoing and that he could not provide any comments at this time. “We are hopeful that the process will be successful,” concluded Alen Simonyan.
