Tropical Storm 'Beryl' Intensifies, Creating Life-Threatening Winds
A state of alarm exists across much of the southeastern Caribbean as Tropical Storm 'Beryl' has intensified, becoming the first storm of the 2024 Atlantic season. Meteorologists warn that it is rapidly transitioning into a significant hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has reported that 'Beryl', currently raging in the Atlantic Ocean about 850 kilometers east of Barbados, is expected to bring with it "life-threatening winds and storm surges" when it reaches the Windward Islands early Monday morning.
Warning that the storm is "intensifying," the NHC forecasts that as it strikes the communities of the Caribbean basin, it will transform into a "dangerous major hurricane." Warnings have been issued in Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada, with tropical storm warnings also in effect for Martinique, Tobago, and Dominica, according to the latest NHC report.
This powerful storm is classified as a Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with wind speeds of at least 179 km/h. Experts say that such a strong storm at the very beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts from June to the end of November, is an extremely rare occurrence.
