The European Union May "Close the Doors" for Georgia
The European Union may "close the doors" to Georgia if the country's government continues its current political course, stated EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell after arriving at an EU Council meeting. His remarks were reported by TASS.
"The path is open for the peoples of Georgia to the EU. However, if the authorities continue doing what they are doing, that path will close. Soon, financial support from the European Peace Fund, high-level political contacts, and financial assistance could be limited," he announced before the start of the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.
He clarified that such measures "should not affect the civilian population." On May 21, during a speech in Berlin on Georgia's Independence Day, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated that Georgia plans to become an EU member by 2030. In May, the Georgian Parliament adopted a bill on foreign agents in its final third reading. Earlier, there was renewed discussion in Georgia about the return of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
