Putin Highlights One of Russia's Main Challenges
The development of the Eastern Polygon of railways is one of the primary challenges for Russia. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
“Thus, the main project for us in the eastern direction, towards China and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, is the development of the so-called Eastern Polygon of railways,” said the head of state. He noted that the parameters for its modernization, already in the third phase, were approved in April.
Putin added that by 2030, the transport capacity of this railway polygon needs to increase to 210 million tons, and by 2032 it should reach 270 million tons.
The Eastern Polygon encompasses four railways: Krasnoyarsk, Eastern Siberian, Transbaikal, and the Far East. It serves the transportation needs of 14 subjects of the Russian Federation and facilitates transit across the country.
Earlier, the Russian president had described Russian railways as the best in the world.
