First Christian Woman Becomes General in Pakistan's Armed Forces
Army doctor Helen Mary Roberts has become the first Christian woman to be awarded the rank of Brigadier General in Pakistan's army. This was reported by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Islamic Republic's Ministry of Defence.
“The conferment of the rank of General to Colonel Roberts is a recognition of her dedication and hard work during her 26 years of military service, and an affirmation of equal opportunity for career advancement in the army for representatives of all faiths, regardless of religious, linguistic, or gender differences,” stated the ISPR press release.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif congratulated Roberts on her obtaining the general’s rank, emphasizing that women in the country can achieve success in any field where they are unmatched. “The achievement of the rank of Brigadier General by the first Christian woman will serve as an example for other religious minorities in Pakistan to serve the country,” said the government leader.
Christians in Pakistan are the second largest religious minority after Hindus, with approximately 3 million Christians comprising 1.6% of the country's population.
