Armenian Foreign Ministry Responds to Aliyev's Recent Statements

The Armenian Foreign Ministry has responded to the recent statements made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. "The Republic of Armenia has no territorial claims against any of its neighbors, including Azerbaijan. The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and its amendments are internal affairs, and we assess the attempts of official Baku to interfere in the domestic discussions that have been ongoing since 2018 as gross interference in our internal affairs.

At the same time, we believe that such rhetoric undermines the peace process and casts doubt on the sincerity of the Azerbaijani leadership's intentions to achieve peace. The Peace Agreement being negotiated between Armenia and Azerbaijan explicitly states that the Parties recognize each other’s territorial integrity and do not have territorial claims against each other.

There is also a provision agreed upon in the draft Peace Agreement stipulating that neither Party can invoke its domestic legislation as a justification for not fulfilling the obligations undertaken by the Peace Agreement. The signing of the Agreement and its ratification through domestic processes will ultimately enshrine these principles.

Therefore, we consider that the clearest and most direct path to alleviate all concerns of the Parties is precisely the signing of the Agreement, which will open a chapter of long-term peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Peace Agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan has matured sufficiently for signing, and the Armenian side expresses its readiness to constructively and intensively work towards completing and signing it within the coming month," the Foreign Ministry's statement reads.
