Alen Simonyan on the Peace Agreement
We have reached a stage where most of the problematic points that have been an issue for both us and Azerbaijan have their answers. This was stated by the President of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, during a brief exchange with journalists.
“I said last year that if there is political will, the peace agreement can be signed tomorrow, but we are witnessing a situation where, for example, the parties meeting discuss something, reach an agreement, and then the President of Azerbaijan starts undermining that process. We have also seen that there are discussions related to Khojaly. It would have been better if the President spoke about the massacres in Sumgait, the atrocities in Baku. If we are going for peace, the side wishing for peace must first address the open wounds that may hinder peace, instead of discussing such matters.
For a country that wants to host COP, which aims to act as a partner on the international stage and wishes to be an equal partner with various countries worldwide, and does not want to complain against the critical democratic and progressive countries of Europe and the world, it must release prisoners of war and political prisoners. We have a person who is not even a soldier, referring to the case of Sujyan, who was abducted from the Azerbaijan-Armenia border and is being held there. I am greatly concerned about this and have communicated my concerns to all international organizations and partners I have met. His health and life may be in danger because, in this particular case, they are seeking revenge, and the one wishing for peace speaks about something at the negotiation table but then sabotages it. But this means nothing, as Armenia will continue on its chosen path of peace. We will bring about peace and the presence of clear borders,” stated Simonyan.
He noted that to understand which part of the peace agreement remains unapproved, we need to wait for Azerbaijan's response. “We have sent our part now and are waiting for their response. At that time we will know what remains unapproved,” said the President of the National Assembly.
Journalists inquired whether an agreement has been reached for Armenia and Azerbaijan to hand over the Nakhichevan-Syunik route to any foreign organization. “I don’t recall any such issue being included in the peace agreement. We have stated, and our position is that we are ready for the opening of all routes and all possible communications that are also beneficial to Azerbaijan,” said Alen Simonyan.
