VIDEO: Unknown Individual Stabs Islam Critic in Germany
An unknown individual has reportedly stabbed German conservative politician and critic of Islam, Michael Stürzenberger, prompting a police officer to intervene and attempt to apprehend the assailant. This was reported by the Bild newspaper.
The incident occurred around 11:30 AM on Friday at a public event organized by the Pax Europa movement in Mannheim's market square. The man attacked Stürzenberger, and other attendees tried to stop the assailant, but he managed to escape.
A video circulating on social media, which may not reflect the entire scope of the incident, shows a man rushing at a participant of the protest, resulting in both tumbling to the ground. One individual can be seen with a visible stab wound to the thigh. According to reports, a police officer struggled to subdue one of the defenders, allowing the assailant to slip free and stab the officer in the back. Almost immediately, another officer fired shots at the assailant.
The condition of all those injured remains unclear. According to Bild, the assailant has been "killed by gunfire," but other media outlets report that he was merely wounded.
Stürzenberger is regarded as an Islamophobic politician in Germany. He previously worked as a representative of the conservative Christian Social Union party in Munich and later served as the now-defunct small party 'Freedom' president. He runs a blog with anti-Islam content and has previously launched civil initiatives aimed at banning the construction of mosques in Munich. He has been convicted twice for insulting a police officer and for inciting religious hatred.
