VIDEO: We Hope to See Global Democracy Standing Beside Us - Pashinyan

To evaluate the progress of democracy in Armenia, it is crucial to note that along with democratic reforms, Armenia has faced external security challenges. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during his speech at the "Copenhagen Democracy Summit" and his participation in the discussion titled "From the Frontline: Armenia’s Defence of Democracy."

“Along with democratic reforms, Armenia has confronted external security challenges: the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh, the incursion of Azerbaijani troops into Armenia’s sovereign territories in 2021-2022, and the occupation of more than 200 square kilometers of Armenia's sovereign territories under the indifference and inaction of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The forced displacement of over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh has left citizens questioning whether democracy is the right choice or if perhaps democracy leads to less security,” emphasized Pashinyan.

According to the Prime Minister, democracy must prove its effectiveness in addressing security, economic, and humanitarian challenges. “We hope to see global democracy standing beside us to tackle all these challenges. We are pleased with the deployment of the EU observation mission along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and welcome the EU's decision to expand the mission's capabilities,” the Prime Minister noted, expressing hope that Armenia will also be included in the European Peace Facility programs and emphasizing the support of EU member states in this regard.

Prime Minister Pashinyan also referred to the high-level Armenia-EU-US meeting that took place in Brussels on April 5: “The European Union and the United States committed to a new package of obligations aimed at enhancing Armenia's economic resilience, state institutions, and addressing the humanitarian needs of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh during my high-level meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, which took place on April 5 in Brussels,” said the Prime Minister, highlighting that the swift and efficient implementation of those commitments is extremely important.
