Massive Floodwaters Threaten Kurgan, Residents Urged to Evacuate Again
In Russia, the head of the Kurgan region, Vadim Shumkov, has announced that a massive wave of water is approaching the regional center due to the spring thaw of rivers. According to reports from Armenpress, Shumkov shared this information in a post on his Telegram channel.
“In addition to the local waters of the Tobol River and the water from the sources flowing into it, more than 1.3 billion cubic meters of water is flowing from Kazakhstan, which, according to the Federal Agency for Water Resources, is double the volume recorded in 1994,” he wrote, adding that the “head” of the flood is currently located 10 kilometers away from Kurgan city.
“The volume of water is massive; everything we see in Kurgan, as the Cheremukhovsky area is flooded, is still just a small part of the volume approaching the city,” emphasized the regional leader.
Shumkov has once again urged the residents of the settlements affected by the flooding to evacuate. “Interfax” reports that specialists from the Ural Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Administration predict that between April 15-18, the water level of the Tobol River near Kurgan will continue to rise, sharply on some days.
An emergency situation was declared in the Kurgan region due to the flooding on April 8. According to TASS, as of the morning of April 15, 15,641 residential houses and 27,993 household plots in 193 settlements across 33 regions of Russia were flooded due to the spring floods. Residential houses have been inundated in the Orenburg, Samara, Kurgan, and Omsk regions, with Orenburg facing the most complex flood situation.
