In Baku, I was offered to lose for $300,000: Frank Chamizo
In Baku, I was offered to lose for $300,000. This was stated by the Cuban-Italian freestyle wrestler, multiple world champion, four-time European and Pan-American champion, Olympic and European Games medalist Frank Chamizo in an interview with Eurosport.
"I knew it would be very difficult for me in Azerbaijan, as I was competing in their home, and they had bought everything. Throughout the entire tournament, the matches against the Azerbaijanis were officiated by the same referee (Alexey Bazulin). I reached the finals, but then something happened that reminds me of boxing from many years ago. And yes, I am serious, they came to me and offered me money, $300,000 to lose. I don’t want to say who, but it happened during the weighing. I sent them away because I represent not only myself, but also Italy, my federation, and the army. It's not easy to compromise my identity. I am a bright example, just look at my fight. I am so disgusted that I don’t feel like I am talking about sports," said Frank Chamizo.
The Italian freestyle wrestler Frank Chamizo was competing for an Olympic quota against Azerbaijani athlete Bayramov at the qualifying tournament in Baku. During the match, Chamizo was regularly denied points, while Bayramov avoided confrontation for over a minute.
