Video: Varazdat Lalayan Wins Gold Medal at Weightlifting World Cup
Member of the Armenian weightlifting team and reigning European champion Varazdat Lalayan has emerged victorious in the Weightlifting World Cup, while Simon Martirosyan finished fourth.
On the last competition day of the Weightlifting World Cup held in Phuket, Thailand, representatives in the men's +109 kg weight category stepped onto the platform.
Varazdat Lalayan, who is set to compete as the European champion in 2024, successfully lifted 205 kg and then 210 kg in the snatch, but did not manage to lift 215 kg. He secured a small gold medal in this event.
In the clean and jerk, the Armenian lifter raised 243 kg and 253 kg, finishing with a total of 463 kg in the combined lift, thereby winning the World Cup.
Simon Martirosyan managed to hold 195 kg above his head in the snatch, but could not secure 202 kg in two attempts, ending up in fifth place in the snatch event. In the clean and jerk, Martirosyan lifted 245 kg, finishing with a total of 440 kg and placing fourth.
It is worth noting that in the 102 kg weight class, European champion Garik Karapetyan won a silver medal on April 8 with a combined lift of 401 kg (185+216). Armenia's second representative in this weight category, Samvel Gasparyan, withdrew from the competition. Andranik Karapetyan received a zero in the snatch event in Group B for 89 kg weight class on April 6 and withdrew from further competition.
