Armenia Is a Key Country for U.S. Civil Nuclear Cooperation Projects, Says O'Brien

The United States and Armenia are exploring opportunities for collaboration in the field of civil nuclear energy. As reported by Armenpress, this was stated by James O'Brien, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, during a press conference focused on the diversification of Armenia's economy.

“The European Union has already begun close cooperation aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of existing nuclear energy sources in Armenia. This cooperation is expanding. Armenia is also a key country for U.S. civil nuclear cooperation projects. The U.S. and Armenia are assessing possibilities for collaboration in civil nuclear energy, based on an agreement signed in 2022 regarding cooperation in this domain, which will allow us to explore several specific projects that we will work on as we move forward,” O'Brien said.

He further explained that the initial step would involve financing the technical and economic sector as Armenia considers its replacement options. This will include conducting scientific exchanges to identify new opportunities and exploring different funding options for the diversification of Armenia's economy.

O'Brien emphasized that U.S. efforts are directed towards a comprehensive package aimed at diversifying Armenia's economy, implementing political reforms, and ensuring stability and peace in the region. “Thus, all these elements need to come together to achieve an outcome that will bring a bright future for the people of Armenia, rather than being tied to just one project,” concluded the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
