VIDEO: If Turkey Attacks, I Doubt Russian Border Guards Will Protect Us – Alen Simonyan
For Armenia, this is already a settled issue. This was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, during a briefing with journalists, referring to the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Zvartnots airport.
“There is an attempt to display a logic of exiting the interstate agreement, but in reality, there has been an inter-agency agreement aimed at assisting Armenian peacekeepers in that area, lightening that burden; there is no longer a need to lighten that burden,” he added.
According to Simonyan, the agreement will take effect on August 1. “We have informed them that ‘brother, thank you, you helped, we highly appreciate that assistance, but the Republic of Armenia no longer needs it. We can manage our airport ourselves.’ Now, various things are being discussed, saying ‘what about the Turkish border’ and so on. I very much doubt that if Turkey decides to attack Armenia, the Russian border guards will be able to or will act to protect us,” said Simonyan.
